Let’s be honest: Traveling with celiac disease can be exhausting. Even when you’re having an amazing time, a part of your brain is always on duty running a continuous risk assessment.
You find yourself packing emergency snacks, interrogating waitstaff like a detective, and planning your daily routes strictly around vetted restaurants.
Vacationing is supposed to be about letting your guard down, but when every single dinner requires a tactical strategy, it adds a layer of mental fatigue to your days. At Hotel Drumlerhof, that whole routine completely vanishes.
To give you some context, back in July 2023, my wife and I were on a 67-day European adventure. We had mapped out this entire trip from city to city, coordinating every train and transfer well in advance.
But while we had the transportation locked down, planning over two months of safe celiac dining ahead of time is nearly impossible. By the time we hit the tail end of that marathon, we were feeling the inevitable burnout of constant travel planning.
We desperately needed a vacation from our vacation, a place where we could just drop our bags, stop overthinking, and feel entirely taken care of.
Hotel Drumlerhof in Campo Tures, also known locally as Sand in Taufers, was our holy grail. Tucked away in the mountains of South Tyrol, Italy, it was the perfect all-in-one solution for an entire week.
If you’re looking for the best gluten-free hotels in Italy, this isn’t just a safe option. It’s a total sanctuary where you can finally relax and just enjoy your food without a single worry.
A warm welcome and a happy accident
While the scenery is incredible, our arrival here was actually born out of a total logistical miscalculation on my part.
When I booked the place, I was convinced we were going to be dead center in the mainstream Dolomites. I didn’t realize that we were actually miles away from all the viral, heavily geotagged Instagram spots.
When we arrived and spoke with the owners’ daughters, Franzi and Emma, they got a huge kick out of our epic journey. We explained our intense routing starting in Munich, changing trains multiple times to weave through the deep alpine valleys just to get to their door.
Once they realized I had accidentally navigated us far off the standard tourist grid, they laughed and told us it was the best mistake we could have made.
They explained that the main Instagram hubs in the Dolomites have become incredibly overcrowded and frantic. Their valley, by comparison, was a peaceful, untouched paradise.
The cultural vibe of the area is a fascinating mix too. While it’s technically Italy, the valley is overwhelmingly German-speaking, with a minority Italian population.
Everything from the street signs to the menus is written in both Italian and German, adding to the unique charm of this northern corner of the country.
Franzi and Emma treated us like VIP explorers who had stumbled into the ultimate hidden gem. They were endlessly eager to help us make the most of our stay, and their proud, local warmth made us feel less like lost tourists and more like fast friends who had lucked into the perfect mountain sanctuary.
A dedicated gluten-free kitchen that actually gets it
The anxiety of cross-contact disappears the second you check in because the hostess, Ruth Innerhofer, has celiac disease herself. She’s spent the last two decades mastering regional recipes, ensuring that no one feels like an afterthought at the dinner table.
The kitchen doesn’t just accommodate food allergies by reluctantly modifying standard dishes; they have an entirely separate, dedicated kitchen block reserved exclusively for gluten-free prep.
When you tell them you’re a zollie, which is the local shorthand for celiac, you’re instantly safe. You can completely skip the awkward, repetitive explanations to the waitstaff.
The half-board experience: safe gluten-free dining from breakfast to dinner
We opted for the half-board package, which is hands down the best way to experience Drumlerhof. When you’re over 50 days into a long journey, having two of your daily meals entirely figured out for you is the ultimate luxury.
Breakfast is a dream, featuring freshly baked gluten-free rolls with a perfect, authentic crust, alongside fluffy, powdered-sugar-dusted waffles topped with fresh strawberries and peaches.
After pushing our legs on the trails, we loved coming back for the afternoon coffee and cake tradition. Sitting down to a proper espresso with a massive slice of homemade, completely safe gluten-free streusels or a tart, vibrant raspberry rhubarb cake felt like pure bliss.
Dinner is where the kitchen really shines with traditional Tyrolean and Italian comfort food. For the first courses, they serve things like a savory cheese soufflé over tomato sauce, classic ragù, ravioli, pesto risotto, and handmade Schlutzkrapfen dusted with fresh parmesan.
The mains are just as good. They do a classic alpine vitello tonnato with seasoned potatoes, incredible beef dishes served with traditional braised red cabbage and potato dumpling, and a fantastic pork dish.
For dessert, they round things out with homemade chocolate mousse cakes, raspberry tarts, and gelatos. The food is so well-made that non-celiacs wouldn’t even realize it’s gluten-free; you honestly end up stealing bites off each other’s plates just to taste everything.
Hitting the trails: zero-stress logistics and hidden gems
The real payoff of having your food completely handled is that you actually have the energy to tackle the local terrain.
Hiking in this part of South Tyrol is nothing short of surreal, surrounded by towering massifs, deep green valleys, and trails that take you right through pastures alongside local alpine cows.
Hotel Drumlerhof takes all the friction out of planning your days. Every morning at breakfast, you’re greeted with a personalized printout detailing the day’s weather and hand-picked hiking routes tailored to the conditions, complete with trail markings, walking times, and altitude changes.
They also hand you free passes for the local public shuttles and the cable cars up to Speikboden and Klausberg, so you can just walk onto the lifts without pulling out your wallet.
On a clear day, the routes are incredible. You can head up toward the Kasseler Hütte, watch the thick fog roll off the rugged peaks, or take a quiet trek up to a historic stone mountain church perched on the edge of the hills.
But where this system really saves your trip is when the alpine weather turns. On a rainy Thursday, instead of being stuck looking at a wall of fog, our daily agenda laid out a perfect wet-weather backup plan: a walk down to the rushing Riva waterfalls, an afternoon tour of the historic Tures Castle, and a stop at the local mineral museum in San Giovanni.
It’s like having a hyper-organized local friend telling you exactly how to maximize your day.
If you want a more guided experience, you can join a group trek with Martin, one of the hotel’s absolute multi-hyphenates.
During the day, he acts as a mountain guide, navigating the rocky terrain and, crucially for celiacs, carrying a dedicated stash of safe local meats, cheeses, and gluten-free bread so you can enjoy an authentic alpine platter at a rustic picnic table on top of a peak without any stress.
Then by evening, he seamlessly shifts roles, working as the hotel’s sommelier to pour the perfect South Tyrolean wine pairing for your dinner.
Having that level of small-town continuity makes the entire experience feel exceptionally warm and intentional.
Eco-luxury, sustainability, and traditional alpine wellness
This zero-stress vibe is built directly into the hotel’s sustainable, eco-conscious philosophy, which feels genuinely authentic.
They don’t leave their saunas and pools blasting heat 24 hours a day just for show; everything is powered responsibly using local biomass.
Their commitment to the environment means you are sleeping in beautifully minimalist, cozy rooms crafted from authentic, aromatic South Tyrolean timber.
The ingredients on your plate are heavily sourced from their own organic farm in Signato or the local Taufrisch community farm.
Even when meat is on the menu, it’s bought directly from local breeders with a strict certified origin, utilizing the animal from nose to tail to minimize waste.
This deep respect for nature extends straight to their fourth-floor rooftop spa, which became our refuge after those long trail days.
We loved chilling by the heated rooftop pool looking out at the valley before heading into the wellness area.
Just a heads up for fellow travelers: the hotel embraces traditional European spa culture, meaning nudity is strictly required in the saunas to keep things hygienic and therapeutic.
They’ve completely banned synthetic, chemical massage oils from the menu. When my wife and I went in for a session at the Zirm Spa, everything they used was entirely natural, including locally sourced mountain pine, stone pine, honey, and alpine herbs.
Getting a massage with ingredients that smell exactly like the forest you just hiked through, while knowing the entire facility is run sustainably, makes it incredibly easy to unwind.
Between a soak in the outdoor sky whirlpool looking out at Tures Castle and a proper pine sauna session, it’s the ultimate way to reset.
