Gluten-Free Grab Bag: Spring 2024 Edition
Find out what's new in the celiac world this season.
I hope everyone is doing well! I can’t believe it’s been a little over six months since I started this newsletter.
It’s been great to connect with so many people in the celiac and gluten-free space over the past few months—and I look forward to continuing to write helpful content for those living with celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders!
As I write this, I’ve just hit 680 subscribers. My goal is to get to 1,000 by the end of this year—so please share with anyone in your life who has celiac disease or is gluten-free!
For this week’s newsletter, I’m sharing some local to New York City gluten-free events, new gluten-free product launches I’m loving, celiac-related articles I’ve written, and gluten-free recipes from around Substack to keep you updated on all the exciting happenings in the celiac world.
I would like to keep this grab bag series up regularly (once a quarter) so you can stay informed. Let me know if you enjoy it, and if there’s anything else you’d like me to add to it in my next edition over the summer!
Gluten-free events in New York City and the surrounding area
There’s a lot going on in New York City for celiacs these days! See what I’ve been up to lately and learn about some fun upcoming events.
This past weekend, I went to a party to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Everybody Eats, a gluten-free bakery in Brooklyn. The cupcakes were absolutely divine (and I’m not ashamed to say I ate four at the party, my favorites being the lemon and Boston cream varieties). I can’t wait to pick up some bread soon.
I also had the opportunity to check out the new permanent location of Sixteen Mill, a gluten-free bakery right around the corner from Everybody Eats. I tried the gluten-free sourdough scallion scone and gluten-free cinnamon swirl muffin, both of which were delicious. Sixteen Mill also sells their baked goods at a variety of businesses across New York City.
Thanks to
for letting me know about Hayley’s Donut in her most recent newsletter. These gluten-free donuts look out of this world and will be available for purchase at various locations in Jersey City and Hoboken in the coming months. I hope to pick up some donuts one of these weekends!Feel Good Foods (one of my all-time favorite gluten-free brands) is hosting a pop-up diner in New York City on Friday, May 3rd. They’re even doing a giveaway and flying one lucky winner and a guest to NYC to enjoy the event. Enter here by April 14th.
Wicked Gluten-Free is hosting a gluten-free expo on Long Island on Sunday, May 5th. Tickets are going fast, so I recommend buying one ASAP if you’re considering going. (And if you are going, let me know!)
New gluten-free products I’m loving
It’s honestly a great time to be gluten-free because so many products are available these days! In terms of new offerings, my favorites include:
Goodles Gluten-Free Cheddy Mac: This is definitely the best boxed mac and cheese option I’ve tried—and it seems slightly more nutritious than some of the others. I found this product at Whole Foods and promptly bought three boxes. They have a gluten-free vegan version too!
Unreal Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzels: My favorite candy brand has just introduced gluten-free dark chocolate-covered pretzels—and I may have eaten an entire bag in one sitting after finding it at Whole Foods.
Justin’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Candy Pieces: Justin’s sent me a sample of their new gluten-free dark chocolate peanut butter candy pieces when they launched, and they’re so good!
Rudi’s Gluten-Free Egg & Cheese Frittata With Sausage Breakfast Sandwiches: I was also nicely gifted these new microwaveable gluten-free breakfast sandwiches from Rudi’s, and I was seriously impressed. I missed fast food breakfast sandwiches, and these satisfied my craving and were very easy to prep.
Celiac burnout is real: here’s how to deal with it
I recently wrote not one but two articles about burnout for different publications. I don’t always practice what I preach, but over the last four years, I’ve developed a few strategies to help me prevent celiac burnout.
For Wondermind, the mental health publication co-founded by Selena Gomez, I wrote: “7 Tips for Anyone Struggling With Chronic Illness Burnout.”
For the Spring 2024 issue of Belly Magazine, a publication from the Canadian Dietary Institute, I wrote: “5 Ways to Cope With Celiac Burnout.” (You can read the full digital version of the magazine for free on Belly Magazine’s website.)
